Wisdom From Divorce: Your Children Will Understand Eventually

July 21, 2013 By Mandy Walker

When you’re weighing up what to tell your children about your divorce, experts agree:  keep it simple, keep it age-appropriate, they don’t need to know the details. That’s hard to do sometimes especially when you see their hurt but stick with it because frequently they will see for themselves.

When my daughter complains about my ex, I have to chuckle to myself because I know when she sees it, she understands a little bit more why we’re divorced.

Between the ages of 22 and 38 Kim Katz was married twice and divorced twice with one child from her first marriage and two from her second. Through it all she’s most proud that she’s been able to maintain a steady state for her children. One of her parenting philosophies is that what happens at dad’s house is dad’s decision and what happens at her house is hers and her partner’s decision. In her book, children do just fine with two homes and two sets of rules.
