Wisdom From Divorce: The Silver Lining To Divorce

June 8, 2014 By Mandy Walker

In all marriages there’s a division of labor and so when the marriage ends, it means you have to take responsibility for all those tasks your spouse used to do. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do it all – you may be able to find service providers to do some tasks-  but most of us do find ourselves learning new skills. That can be a silver lining.

Even though I handled the bill paying, my husband had handled all the investing. When we got divorced I realized I needed to learn how to do this and I needed to learn to learn how to do it well. I ended up getting my licenses and a financial planning accreditation. I was amazed. It just came to me. If hadn’t gotten divorced I never would have known that. ~ Maryan

When Maryan got divorced she’d been out of the workforce for some time. Discovering her aptitude for investing lead to a whole new career and financial independence.

Have you had to learn new skills since your divorce?
