One question that confronts newly divorced people is what to do with all the wedding memorabilia. If you get rid of everything and make like the marriage never happened, it’s like creating a void. I still have a whole box of stuff to do with wedding tucked away in the basement along with my dress. I still have my wedding album and although I don’t have any photos hanging around the house, I won’t part with the wedding photos because I feel those are part of my children’s history. But what about your wedding and engagement rings? What do you do with those? Here’s what Julia did:
I melted down my wedding ring. I did it right before the divorce was final and I told my ex I was doing it.
Both my kids were born in January, twelve months apart, so they have the same birthstone which is a garnet and so I have three garnets in the middle of the ring. The kids call it the family ring.
When they were little they’d always point to the stones and say their name as they pointed to the stones and they say “mama” was in the middle.
The guy who I designed it with added three diamonds to either side so it’s all threes.
It’s my family ring now.

I love this idea. Not only is it fun to create a beautiful piece of jewelry that you’ll actually wear, I think it is also very symbolic of a new beginning.
I was going to melt down my wedding band, which was set with diamonds, and mix it with my mother’s and grandmother’s wedding bands but then I lost my ring somehow when I moved. It was going to be my “me” ring because it would have been made of everything that had made me who I had become.
What have you done with your wedding and/or engagement bands? What would your new jewelry piece look like?
