Over this coming month I’m participating in a challenge to build a better blog offered by Problogger. I’m on day 2 and am committed to following through on the each task assigned. With a task each day it does sound a little intense and I’m hoping I won’t fizzle out half-way through. Anyway, today’s challenge is to write a “list post.” So here goes ….
When I interview women about what they consider to be their most significant accomplishment since getting divorced, I always ask them what helped them to be successful. Often times it’s a particular book. However, finding the right book can be hard – I can walk into a bookstore, go to the particular section and then faced with several or many books on the topic, turnaround and leave empty handed, feeling overwhelmed. Having a recommendation from a friend or trusted adviser helps enormously. So, with that in mind, here are my top five books recommended by my sources.
1. The Wisdom of No Escape by Pema Chodron. This is a basic meditation instruction recommended by Carol Grever in the post, Spiritual Awakening.
2. Sex and the Seasoned Woman by Gail Sheehy. This is Sheehy’s commentary on her interviews with older women (forty plus) about sex and relationships, recommended by Cathy in the post, The Pilot Light Lover.
3. Your Money or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence by Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez. Sue in Money Troubles Part II credits this book with helping her out of bankruptcy.
4. Overcoming Underearning: A Five Step Plan to a Richer Life by Barbara Stanny. Another book recommended by Sue in Money Troubles.
5. Rebuilding: When Your Relationship Ends by Dr. Bruce Fisher and Dr. Robert Alberti. A guide to recovering from divorce, recommended by Sue in Emotionally Alive.
If you’ve read any of these books, leave a comment about what you found most helpful. And if you have other books that have helped you, please add to the list.

By far the most profound and helpful book I read after my divorce was #1 The Wisdom of No Escape by Pema Chodron. I read her other books as well and still go back to them.
