This resonates with me. I have two small kids, 6 and 9. I feel that they need me to be here when they're home from school, and yet I distance myself emotionally, preferring my solitude. There's a lot of guilt about that, and as my husband has noted, I could do well by giving "more warmth". I know in my heart he's right. Holding back, diving into our own world of writing, keeping the deadlines, being what everyone else wants us to be, but not allowing ourselves to take time to read the wonderful books or take the beloved dog for a walk.... who are we really cheating?
